From Stack’s Bowers: Sweet Tahitian PMG-graded 1000 Franc Note

This November in Baltimore, at Stack’s Bowers official world paper money auction at the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo, they are offering one of the finest PMG-graded 1000 Franc notes from Tahiti’s Bank of Indochina. Of the 10 they have graded 66, this is the only one that has received the Star designation that indicates exceptional quality for the grade. Our guess is the wide margins, embossing, and flawless paper are the driving forces behind the superior grade. The note features the word SPECIMEN printed in a black overprint diagonally on the top left of the note, while a perforated form of the word exists vertically on the ride margin.

The note bears motifs of the indigenous people of Tahiti. To the right on the front of the note, a women sits with pots on the ground around her, hands on her knee, and breasts exposed. On the left side, women are seen caring for children, carrying pots, and looking toward the viewer, while camels can be seen in the background. The back of the note features a woman carrying a basket over her head, while the man to the right holds a spear. They appear to be in a village with the ocean and mountains in view behind them. The watermark features a beautiful woman’s head, adorned with a crown made of flowers.

The note carries an estimate of $800-$1,200 and is offered as lot 50083 in their live world paper money session of the Official Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo, November 5-6.

Can You Stump the World’s Greatest Numismatist?

Our thanks to everyone who entered! Stay tuned for updates.

Ask the Right Question and Win a Gift Certificate from Whitman Publishing!

He’s been called “the greatest living numismatist,” perhaps even “the most knowledgeable coin expert of all time.” Any way you cut it, Q. David Bowers is the Gold Standard in numismatic knowledge. Now’s your chance to “Beat the Gold Standard,” at the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo, November 5-8, at the Baltimore Convention Center.

Not a question that no human can reasonably be expected to know, like the exact date a Mint director took office, or the mintage of a 1916-D Lincoln cent, but a question of general interest in American numismatics. Then, join us in Room 301 at 3pm on Thursday, November 5, with moderator Christine Karstedt. If your question beats the Gold Standard, you could win up to $250 in prizes from Whitman Publishing.

Stack’s Bowers Galleries Presents The John W. Adams Collection

A Featured Collection in Our November 5-6, 2015 Baltimore Auction.

The name John W. Adams is uttered wherever serious American numismatists gather. Widely published and broadly respected for his research contributions to such fields as American numismatic literature, United States large cents, and early American medals, John W. Adams has been a consigner to this firm and its predecessors for more than three decades.

In 1982, we sold the Adams collection of 1794 large cents by variety, a collection where provenance played as important a role as rarity and condition. In 2001, duplicates from his prodigious cabinet of Betts medals were offered in one of our Baltimore auctions, and in 2009 his Indian Peace medals were the anchor consignment to our American sale.

We are proud to offer further selections from the John W. Adams collection of Betts medals, encompassing an era from the 1766 passage of the Stamp Act to the aftermath of the American Revolution.

Highlights include the famous Battle of Germantown medal, awarded to members of the 40th Regiment of Foot in honor of their valor at the 1777 battle on the outskirts of Philadelphia; the Resolution and Adventure medal, given by Captain James Cook to natives of the Pacific regions he explored; a silver Washington Voltaire medal, a rare format for the first Washington medal ever struck, and the extremely rare 1783 Felicitas Britannia and Americana medal, struck to mark the Treaty of Paris, using a reverse design borrowed from the Continental dollar.

The John W. Adams Collection will be offered Friday, November 6 in Session 5 of our November 2015 Baltimore Auction. Bidding begins at 6:00 p.m. in Room 308.
